On vacation, it's easy to let our food choices slip, happens to the best of us, myself included. It's important to find a balance between enjoying yourself, immersing yourself in the local culture and cuisine, and making the right food choices as much as possible. With a little planning and mindfulness, you can make smart food choices while still savoring the local cuisine and most importantly, enjoying yourself.
First and foremost, do a lot of research ahead of your trip, I love going to places where you can customize and make your healthy wholesome bowl, like my most recent visit to The Salad Project in my short trip to London. It was in collaboration with Deliciously Ella and the plant-based bowls were to die for. There is a lack of such fresh on-the-go options in India no? Maybe I should open one in the future, who knows!?
Next, try to be aware of what and how much you are eating! That huge bread basket that is served to you for free at the beginning of a meal? Avoid it at all costs. I know it is one of the hardest things, but trust me it gets easier with time. Start your meal with some fiber (aka veggies) and then follow it up with protein, and fats, and keep the carbs for the end if possible. I know it's not always possible, but every single place can make you a small plate of sauteed veggies, just ask!
Additionally, don't be afraid or shy to ask your server about the preparation of the dishes. Opt for grilled, steamed, or roasted options over fried or heavily sauced dishes. Choose meals that incorporate plenty of vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. You need all that nourishment for a day planned with tons of walking and activities right? Even if you are just on an island somewhere, lounging with a margarita (again be mindful of how many you are consuming and whether you are hydrating enough), you need those nutrients to keep you energized.
Having a stash of fresh fruits, dried fruits, and nuts in your bag or hotel room can help you resist the temptation of unhealthy snacks and start your day off on the right foot. Staying hydrated is also crucial, carry a reusable water bottle, GAME CHANGER.
Lastly, don't forget to stay active during your vacation. Take advantage of outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming, or walking tours, to keep your body moving. Many destinations also offer fitness classes or yoga sessions that can be a fun way to stay active while on vacation. My favorite thing to do is to do at least one trial fitness class and check out a new studio/instructor, and the first classes are usually free, so it's a win!
Check out some of my plates from all over the world, over the years! These were not only tasty but I was also able to enjoy them guilt-free! Of course, as you can see, I also indulged in a pizza, pasta, and a glass of wine or two, it is all about balance!
Bon appétit and safe travels!
